Panjab University Senate elections for the professors’ constituency Monday witnessed a polling percentage of 98 percent, while assistant and associate professors saw a polling percentage of 96 percent.
There were a total of 244 voters for the professors’ constituency out of which 239 turned out to vote. For assistant professors, there were a total of 506 voters out of which 486 cast their votes. A total of five booths were set up for the polls.
Four groups had fielded their candidates for the two seats of professors and assistant/ associate professors respectively . Navdeep Goyal had fielded Ajay Ranga to represent the assistant professors and Rajat Sindhir from science for the professors’ constituency.
While Akshay Kumar in alliance with the Navdeep Goyal-group fielded himself from the professors’ constituency, Yadwinder Pal represented the assistant professors’ constituency. On the other hand, the Keshav Malhotra-group had fielded Rajesh Gill from Arts from the professors’ constituency and Parveen Goyal from assistant and associate constituency.
What Else is Making News?
Many independent candidates were also in fray which included Karamjeet Singh, a sitting senator who contested independently against Akshay Kumar from the professors’ constituency. Samarjit Sihotra of Physics department contested for assistant professors constituency.
With the conclusion of polling for professors and assistant professors constituency, now, only one phase of Senate elections is left. The elections for graduate constituency will be held on 25 September.
