Left alliance sweeps JNU polls

NEW DELHI: The Left Unity, an alliance of All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Students’ Federation of India(SFI), on Saturday won all four top posts in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union elections.

Mohit Kumar Pandey of AISA-SFI combine was elected as president of the JNUSU.

Amal PP from SFI with 2461 votes was elected as the vice-president.

Shatarupa Chakraborty from SFI with 2424 votes has won the general secretary’s post.

Tabrez Hasan with 1670 votes has been elected as the joint secretary of the new students’ union.

The JNUSU polls, a keenly fought contest, have been hogging more limelight this year against the backdrop of the February 9 event during which “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised.
The incident had led to the arrest of outgoing JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and two others.
CPI-affiliated All India Students Federation (AISF), of which Kanhaiya is a member, was not contesting the polls this time.
